//=================================//
        Shifter for Deus Ex
  Advanced Installation Instrutions
//=================================//

This process has only been tested on a Windows system. I make no guarantee that
this will work for any OS 9 users who attempt a similar process.

STEP 1: Create copies of the files DeusEx.exe and DeusEx.ini, located in your
C:\DeusEx\System folder. Rename these copies Shifter.exe and Shifter.ini.

STEP 2: Create a new directory in your DeusEx\ folder called Shifter. Inside
that folder create another folder called System. Extract DeusEx.int and
DeusEx.u to this new directory. Also, create a copy of the new DeusEx.int file,
rename it Shifter.int and put it in the DeusEx\System folder.

STEP 3: Open up DeusEx\System\Shifter.ini in notepad. Scroll down to the
following section:

[Core.System]
PurgeCacheDays=30
SavePath=..\Save
CachePath=..\Cache
CacheExt=.uxx
<etc>

Above the first "Paths=" entry insert:

Paths=..\Shifter\System\*.u

So you should wind up with:

[Core.System]
PurgeCacheDays=30
SavePath=..\Save
CachePath=..\Cache
CacheExt=.uxx
Paths=..\Shifter\System\*.u
Paths=..\System\*.u
Paths=..\Maps\*.dx
Paths=..\Textures\*.utx
Paths=..\Sounds\*.uax
Paths=..\Music\*.umx
<etc>

STEP 3a (Optional): For any other mods you wish to play with Shifter rules --
e.g. Zodiac, RedSun2020, etc. -- open up their corresponding *.ini files and
repeat the process described in STEP 3 for each file. NOTE: Do not do this
with Hotel Carone; instead place the new "Paths=" entry after the last entry
with "HotelCarone" in the name.

STEP 4: Copy the file Shifter.exe and then select "Paste Shortcut". You should
wind up with a Shortcut to Shifter.exe in the DeusEx\System directory. Rename
this file "Shifter Config".

STEP 5: Right-click "Shifter Config" and select Properties. In the text box
marked "Target" add the following to the end of the line (including the space
and the quotes):

 "-changevideo"

Hit Apply, then OK. You can now use this shortcut to change your 3d rendering
device, should you need to. NOTE: There is no way to change the 3d rendering
device used for Shifter other than using the Shortcut just created. All
attempts to do so through the in-game configuration screen will simply change
the rendering device for normal Deus Ex.
