"Military training?" Carson nodded. "What about my family? Did I have kids?"

"No, no kids. You weren't even married. You were in Paris on business when Denton blew the Aquinas router. It was our good luck that we didn't have to travel halfway across the world to find you."

"What was my name?"

"I can't tell you that."

"Why not? I can't go around calling myself Tiberius! People will think I'm a weirdo!"

"That's a code name, it's as much for my benefit as it is for yours. For the purposes of our operations I will refer to you as Agent Tiberius. Your real name is unimportant. Something generic, worthless. It's a part of your past life, one that you're going to have to leave behind. Besides, I couldn't tell you if I wanted to. I only know you by your case number."

"Isn't there anything else I should know?"

"The only thing you're doing right now is stalling, Tiberius. Information will be provided as necessary, but right now you must focus on your new assignment. I'm sending you to Japan. There are areas within that country that were not part of the centralized communications network, and we happen to have an equipment broker in Tokyo that may be able to help us. I need you to make contact with him. A translator will accompany you, and he will have a list of equipment needed for purchase."

"You've turned me into a nano-augmented errand boy?"

"It's not as simple as it sounds. Certain groups within the city are not friendly towards us. It will be difficult to reach your contact, but I think this is a good place to start with your training. We'll get a good idea of what you can do."

"And if I refuse?"

"I kill you."
