The man dropped his assault rifle and clutched his stomach. He was too far away for Tiberius to make out anything too clearly, but it was obvious what was happening. He fell forward and rolled onto his back, writhing about for a few moments. Even after he stopped moving, Tiberius continued to stare at him, his eyes wide open.

I just...what have I done?

The translator looked back and forth between Tiberius and the corpse. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He wanted to say something to Tiberius, but couldn't get the words out. Very slowly, the agent lowered his weapon and continued to stare. It was Carson that finally broke the silence.

"You're in hostile territory, Agent. Gawking will get you killed."

Tiberius blinked and shook his head quickly, then looked at the translator. After exchanging glances for a moment they both ran over to the body. In the man's holster was a 10 millimeter pistol similar to Tiberius's. He scavenged the clip and also a flare. Since they were finished with the body, the two got up to continue on. The translator started walking just in time to miss being shot in the head with a 30.06 rifle round.

Tiberius jumped back, and panicked again. Inadvertently, he activated an augmentation again, but this time the crawling sensation was in a different part of his head.

This really is not a good time!

The translator ducked his head into his arms and ran for the nearest cover. Tiberius grabbed the assault rifle from the corpse, ignoring the sensation for a minute. Another shot came down and struck the pavement. Tiberius looked up and saw that it had come from the third-floor window of a decaying building. He pointed the assault rifle at it and sprayed two bursts of bullets at it. The recoil and the odd angle threw his aim off entirely, but the shooter withdrew anyway, taking cover behind a table inside as the window frame and wall were torn up.
