<COMMENT>Datacube on a desk in the AI labs</COMMENT>

Mortimer, I uploaded the project files for our next construct, Wintermute, to the TeamFTP. Password is the same as usual.

Since you were absent on our meeting today, I'll give you a brief rundown of what the project is all about: In an effort to solve the problems we've previously had with our personality modules, Wintermute will have no personality ROMs at all. The personality interface will be handled by another AI specifically designed with that purpose in mind.

The personality AI will be designed in the second half of the project (entitled Project Dialectica, btw), which has a scope of 5 years. We haven't planned anything for the personality AI yet, but it's probably going to be comprised mostly of upgraded versions of our old personality modules, with only a few primitive logic modules to control the behaviour of the personality. In the first phase of the project, our greatest challenge will be to design a new system to allow the AI's to exchange data directly and effectively.

Emilia has been toying with the idea of giving Wintermute the ability to read a user's memory in order to extract the characteristics of people the user has previously met and use them in place of normal programmed personality ROMs. Emilia wrote her doctorate on memory, if she claims she can let an AI read my mind, I choose to believe her. However, even though she assured us that the AI wouldn't be able to read a user's thoughts, neither Ralph nor I like the prospect of having our memory read.

I would like to hear your opinion on Emilia's idea when you get this. Just drop me a mail if I'm not around. Oh, and I hope your dentist was gentle with you? ;)
